Mel B Tells Australian Television the Girl Group Could Reform for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012

News of a potential team-up of the members of the Spice Girls have surfaced once again, this time thanks to singer Mel B.

Though Mel C and other members of the Spice Girls have previously ruled out performing in relation to the London 2012 Olympics, news from Australian television tells us that there might be a Spice Girls reunion after all, albeit for a different important event. Mel B was speaking down under and hinted that the group could be getting together to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.

Though the plans are still under wraps the singer pointed out they could wind up performing together towards the end of the year.

The Spice Girls were, of course, the famous girl band that released three studio albums in the 1990s and became famous for songs such as “Spice Up Your Life”, “Wannabe”, “2 Become 1” and “Goodbye”, among others. They were popular for spreading the idea of ‘Girl Power’ around the world, in addition to the Union Jack flag thanks to the dress famously worn by Geri Halliwell onstage. They also starred in the film “Spice World the Movie” alongside the likes of Richard E Grant and other well known stars.

They were also famous for the song “Viva Forever”, which is also the title of the upcoming West End musical that will feature their hits. Currently being penned by Jennifer Saunders the London theatre production would follow in the footsteps of “Mamma Mia!” at the Prince of Wales Theatre, which features the songs of ABBA. No venue or dates have been confirmed for the production as of writing, though it has previously been hinted that it could appear before the end of the year.

Though nothing has been planned at the moment, Jason Bonham (son of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, who played with the group at their reunion show) has been speaking about the possibility of future Led Zeppelin shows with The Sun. He told the newspaper that you “can never say never” on future live performances from the famous British rock band, but adds that there is no talk at the moment. It gives some hope to the millions of Led Zeppelin fans around the world that missed out on their reunion show in 2007.

That gig featured Jason Bonham in his dad’s shoes at the O2 Arena in London – where shows such as 25th anniversary “Les Misérables” and “Strictly Come Dancing – O2 Arena” have since been staged – in 2007. That show – which was a one-off Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert – saw huge demand in concert tickets, with as many as 20 million requests, and saw one of the biggest British rock bands of all time perform for the first time in decades.

Led Zeppelin were proven to be one of the best selling artists in the world during their career, with albums such as “Led Zeppelin” through to “Led Zeppelin IV” selling well, in addition to “Houses of the Holy” and Coda”, among others. They disbanded in 1980 following the death of drummer John Bonham.

It has been revealed that Paul McCartney is set to release a new album in 2012 and reports also indicate that both Stevie Wonder and Eric Clapton will have guest appearances. It will be his first release since 2007’s Memory Almost Full appeared in shops around the world.

NME says that the album will feature two new recordings and various covers of songs McCartney enjoyed as a child.

The news emerges as McCartney heads to the stage this month with shows at the Manchester Evening News Arena and Liverpool’s Echo Arena.

Sir Paul McCartney is, of course, a music legend, having played bass guitar with The Beatles alongside band members Ringo Starr, John Lennon and George Harrison during the 1960s and following that up with solo work and work with Wings throughout the 1970s. His work has been enormously influential, with The Beatles still regarded as one of the best bands of all time and spawning various movies and even a West End musical called Backbeat. As a solo artist he has released albums such as McCartney in 1970, McCartney II in 1980 and Give My Regards to Broad Street in 1984 in addition to more recent additions like Driving Rain in 2001, Chaos and Creation in the Backyard in 2005 and Memory Almost Full in 2007.

The tracklist for the album has yet to be announced, though Paulmccartney.com has been streaming the song My Valentine and further news will likely emerge as it nears its release date.

Considering Billy Corgan has been behind a wealth of albums as a member of the Smashing Pumpkins, Zwan and solo projects it is a given that the man knows how to pen some well-received songs. So the idea of the legendary rock star trying his hand at penning musical numbers for Broadway is not that big of a stretch and this is the exact topic that has come up in an interview with The New York Post.

Corgan has pointed out that he would like to lend his skills to penning tracks for musicals, though he also indicates that he would have to improve in the area before he followed in the footsteps of other rock stars-turned Broadway writers like Bono and The Edge (who penned the ill-fated Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark). He has also ruled out re-using songs from his extensive back catalogue and would instead insist on putting a lot of effort into creating new work.

As well as Bono and The Edge, there are plenty of other well known names that have decided to tackle musical theatre over the years, whether it is the members of ABBA penning Chess and lending their songs to Mamma Mia!, or Elton John penning songs for Billy Elliot the Musical. It shows that even in the West End there are plenty of shows at the box office that feature the work of established personalities.

Billy Corgan is well known for his work with The Smashing Pumpkins, with whom he has released many albums since 1991’s debut Gish, including Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and the recent Teargarden by Kaleidyscope. During the band’s split between 2000 and 2007 he also released work with the band Zwan and a solo album.

When we think of music, though singing will come to mind rather quickly, we usually imagine it accompanied with various instruments to back up the great vocals. This is not always the case, however, and choirs are also an important and popular part of the music world.

A choir is an ensemble of singers sometimes, but not always, associated with the church (very often, choirs not associated with the church are referred to as a chorus). Like an orchestra there will often be a conductor or choirmaster who will lead the choir in performance and the whole choir will be split into four sections to create a four part harmony. Some choirs can also have some sort of musical accompaniment to aide them though singing without this is referred to as ‘a cappella’.

Choirs are also split into different versions that will naturally produce different sounds. Mixed choirs contain both men and women with the sound being SATB (soprano, alto, tenor and bass). Male choirs also have an SATB sound. Female choirs have an SSA sound (soprano, soprano II and alto). Men choirs contain more baritone and bass to produce a TTBB sound whilst Children’s choirs have an SA (soprano, alto) sound.
